I was thinking this week about a blue card I got from a dear woman at church. A while back she let me know I had put a wrong word in the bulletin. I didn’t think much of this as I get a couple of these each week because, well… because I am terrible at grammar. Needless to say I like to fix these mistakes and so I am pretty much alright when I get these messages.
She however took the time to let me know that she loved me, and that she was sorry if it hurt my feelings and she shared with me the common experience of having done bulletin work. She let me know I was loved and she encouraged me to keep up the good work.
I got to go to camp for a week and take pictures. There was this wonderful event where the kids had an obstacle course they had to run through while the counselors pelted them with stuffed animals, nerf darts, and one would stick them with a plunger if they came to close. It was called “assault.” It was meant to be a metaphorical representation of how life feels as a Christian. With all sorts of distractions and temptations and sin that come at you from all angles.
Here is where I am at my friends. This woman from church did something that made my heart come alive for this church once more. In the midst of all of the things flying around and over and under there was this ball that happened to hit me. Usually one of these is something that ruins your day right? This time however it
was a simple note of encouragement.
Something odd happened after that. I got really motivated to work a little harder on the bulletin, to plan one more event, to write an extra paragraph into my sermon. I found I had a little hop in my step because there was someone out in the auditorium who was happy with my performance. She let me know something to improve on and let me know that if I didn't I was loved and doing alright!
What a difference a simple couple words can do for you. Why don’t we each spend this week trying to find one thing we can let people know we notice they are doing well? Let us see if we can motivate each of each other to be a little more excited and motivated to take an extra step. After all we are meant to be a family that stands shoulder to shoulder and helps one and other stand amidst all of the hard stuff.
God bless you all. Keep your chin up!
